    Lim, Lie Siax-Liuu (林李榭柳) ( 1898-1996)

 Professor Dr. Lin, Engteg's mother, aged 98, remained hundreds of colorful sketches and paintings of flowers and woods.

 During her lifetime, nearly one century, so familiar with the environmental delicacy around her, she cherished any living creatures including the little animals and little children touched by her tenderness.

 If not with the deep passion to the ground and the respect to the vast life of MOTHER NATURE, how could she drew such delicate and elegant pictures.  Lim, Lie Siax-Liuu virtually was one of the last narrator of Taiwan Culture.

My mother, Mrs' Liim-Lie Shiaxliuu was born in Taixoafn Village in Tailaam (Tainan) Country on Sept. 16, 1899.  My mother is left handed.  From her childhood she has enjoyed reading and writing; she is well versed in the Three Character Primer, One Thousand Poems Primer, The Four Books, The Five Classics. In addition to these, she also mastered the skill of making clothes and the art of embroidery. After growing up, she was married to the Lim family.  Then she began to devote herself to the daily work in traditional Taiwanese family life. She was a loving mother. She is a Buddhist and has made her offerings at the Tuan-Yeng Temple in Kuijiin for almost thirty years.  In recent years, she has developed her skill in traditional Taiwanese Folk embroidery forms and patterns. Her works in this field is a pure example of Taiwanese folk art.

My Mother's Paintings 

  1. The main subjects in my mother's paintings are trees and flowers. The styles of the tree-flower-forms are of various kinds, each displaying the most colorful cultural characteristics of the people. The forms themselves seem to be inexhaustibly varied.
  2. My mother's paintingis not tarnished by modern civilization. It is very frank, clear and pretty without any trace of artificiality.
  3. My mother's paintingsare simple, but they convey meaning and emotion to viewers.
  4. My mother's paintingsalways keep the essence of the innocence of childhood.  They enable you to see and inspect the traditional good-will and naturalness in Taiwanese culture.
  5. My mother paintssymbolic flowers which suggest memories of old gardens that she knew. 
  6. My mother's techniquegives the feeling of embroidery learned in her childhood. Each stroke gives expression to her love of nature and of her family.
  7. My another's paintingsremind one of the beautiful scenery of old Taiwan. They make one ashamed of the loss of the simplicity of Taiwanese culture. 

  8. My mother's paintingsare unlimited in imagination and phantasy. They are simple and pretty just like flawing water, floating clouds, or a poem; they also give an impression of always being alive and fresh.
